It is just about shortening learning curve of being a Microsoft customer in long run and nothing more. There ARE free softwares out there. Why should someone get happy of having a commercial tool for free? And the license said: not for commercial uses! Let inverse this: Use free software; get educated and then use that free software for commercial use!
Cheers!

"While this action from Microsoft may be fueled by the need to face the free software community, ..."

Is this just MSDNAA opened to everyone, regardless of relationship to the school, or something?

oh thats great. So the guy at home who doesnt use MSVS at work and cant afford to buy it himself is out of luck. Sure the express versions are 'ok', but its not enough. I.E. the C++ support for MS VS Express edition is horrible compared to the MS VS 200x commercial release.

It's not "Free Software". Maybe freeware...
