I've configured and maintained over 100 UNIX-based servers over the years starting with Slackware Linux 2.0 back in 1995. Over all course of all the deployments I've become very biased about my operating systems. Linux clearly has a solid lead with desktop applications, but for server deployments and maintainability, I believe firmly in FreeBSD.

freebsd ports sucks, you have to take servers down more time for package upgrading. python, mysql applications are slower than on linux. SMP has better support on linux, amd64 the same. Linux has bigger community and has more testers/developers, so packages quality is higher.

to vitaliel -- that simply is not true at all! i have never had a serious issue with freebsd ports for 3 years and i wish such a powerful and reliable system would be available on other platforms. (well, pkgsrc from netbsd would fit the bill, i guess.) new freebsd 7 is better in smp and even mysql runs better than on linux which is quite amazing since mysql is developed on and for linux primarily. (read e.g. http://jeffr-tech.livejournal.com/) and no other linux distro but debian has more packages and developers available. freebsd is far bigger and more professional project and community than most linux distros out there. you simply cannot deny it. well, you'd better go and learn something first. :o)

Vitaliel, dude, this isn't a political election. You might want to actually try an OS before tearing it down to make yours seem better.
1. The FreeBSD ports system is rock solid. A simple 'make install' and you can build just about any piece of open source software you could want. Need to modify the build?...either pass parameters into make or modify the BSD makefile. What's that, don't want to compile it? pkg_add -r xxxx is your ticket.
2. Hmmmm....have you checked out freebsd-update for binary upgrades?
3. SMP support is excellent in 6 and, as martinko said, it's only getting better.
4. Wow, you obviously aren't a developer. More developers != better software. If you have ever looked at the choas that is the linux kernel's development paradyme, you would know what I'm talking about.
Every OS has it's pluses and minuses. Find what works and roll with it.,
