Give me a reason, any reason at all, to continue using Mac OS X as my primary development platform for Java applications. Java SE 6 is available now for Windows, Linux, and Solaris platforms. Why not for Mac OS X? The available Java SE 6 implementation is stuck at build 88 and hasn't been updated in months.

Although I disagree with him, Steve Jobs said, “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”
Maybe Sun and IBM aren't interested in a hostile player?

Its GPL now, so maybe you can try building the source?

It is unfortunate that Jobs was vague in his statement. From the context, it can be inferred that he was talking about Java ME. On an iPhone, Java ME could be considered heavyweight. On a MacPro or XServe, Java SE/EE is certainally not a heavyweight ball and chain that nobody uses anymore.

Java 6 will ship with Leopard just like Java 5 shipped with Tiger. If you're a Mac or Linux user, it's just a reality that the JDK's run 6 months or so behind Solaris and Windows.
