Not that I was a great fan off them ever really but, after some things I saw while trying to register a domain and reading one of the latest posts on TechCrunch I really have no time for them and will definitely not use or refer anyone to them.

This has been happening forever, and its largely a non-issue now. This article is nothing but FUD mixed with stupidity. If the author's head wasn't 100% up his ass, he could have found something similiar to this via "a well-known search engine":

Results 1 - 10 of about 13,500 for "domain alert".
Results 1 - 10 of about 1,010 for "domain sniping".

First off, none of this would matter if you, as the domain owner, KEEP YOUR DOMAIN CURRENT. *ESPECIALLY* if you have a business that is based off of a domain! Your rant places you square in the middle of the group of individuals, who after failing to pay for a service, bitch because said service is discontinued. Let's step back and look at this for a moment; who's problem is that, really? Is your registrar supposed to be your mother (and by-the-way, most domain registrars, including GoDaddy, send many emails prior to the expiration of a domain)?

But, lets apply this scenario to tangible goods. Say you "forgot" to pay your rent/lease/mortgage/loan/etc. for the premises upon which your business resides. Does the owner of that property not have the right to evict you, and likewise, the right to lease the property to another party? Why not? In the business world, nobody gives a shit if you "forgot" to pay; excuses and apologies don't pay the bills.

If you're still utterly confused, please read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_sniping

Dude, learn some manners. Weren't you ever taught that if you don't have anything nice to say, keep your mouth shut. I have no idea who this poster is, but it doesn't matter. We are in a community here and we shouldn't be dicks to each other. You could have gotten your point across without being rude.

Tip of the day: READ THE FINE PRINT!

P.S. This took under 30s to find this on the GoDaddy site:

"If the name you are interested in has gone to auction at The Domain Name Aftermarket, the £9.49 cost will be used to place the opening bid on the name. If no other bids are placed, the domain will be awarded to you subject to the rights of the previous domain holder. If another bid is received on the name, you will receive an outbid notice and can raise your bid on the name or move the backorder to another name.

...

Please understand that a backorder does not guarantee you the domain name being backordered. The domain name may be renewed by its current owner and not become available or we may be unsuccessful in our attempts to grab it and register it on your behalf."

Wow, did you see that? Incase you missed it, here it is:

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT A BACKORDER DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU THE DOMAIN NAME BEING BACKORDERED.

I would post it in reply to the jackass on the other thread, but I can't be bothered to fight with DZ's crap user system which doesn't share sessions with this site.
