MPEG LA, the organization that holds the patents on H.264 encoding, just released a statement announcing that they will extend H.264's royalty-free period through the end of 2016. The royalty free period will only apply to free Internet video as it does in the current term, which ends on January 1, 2011. This is a good news for those who support the H.264 format in the HTML5 video standards battle.
