Some parts of Android will be familiar, such as the Linux Kernel, OpenGL, and the SQL database. Others may be completely foreign, such as Android’s idea of the application life cycle. You’ll need a good understanding of these key concepts in order to write well-behaved Android applications.

Android is a nice idea. There are many voices saying that Google's reinventing the wheel and such, but I really like the freedom Android seems to offer to the developers. Their common interface for standard and developer applications is really a step forward in the world of mobile devices programming and the fact that you have access to the device API's is great, I think it will spawn a plethora of good and useful applications. Also, even though it is in a beta phase they have some pretty comprehensive and detailed documentation and that is one thing I appreciate very much.
