It can be rather difficult, but it doesn't need to be that way. You can learn the basics of programming using the all the available tools and tutorials, you can focus only on 1 programming language and start working project based (you might start working for free!), and after you got enough experience, you can start as a full time programmer. I don't think that this process is going to take longer than a year...
