I dug in and did some research on use of JSTL across various servlet spec versions and application servers. Out of this research came this article, which provides the reader with instructions on how to reference and use the JSTL taglibs across most common servlet containers. I did this out of frustration with the lack of organized information on this subject, and the endless postings on the subject in the Spring MVC forums - not super exciting, but hopefully it helps someone!
