In this post, I’m going to explain how you can setup a Java development environment (JDK + Eclipse) in Ubuntu. I’m using Ubuntu 10.10, but these steps should be applicable to majority of Ubuntu versions.

Yes -- Voted UP.
Although I am not a fan of Java, this is a very valid way to install the JDK on Ubuntu.
You install the real McCoy where you want.
apt-get is fantastic but somehow you never install the latest latest version and the origin is not always crystal clear in
synaptic package manager.
