Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, you have surely heard of the war between Rails and PHP. There are no casualties, no land mines and no tv coverage. Zend_Framework is fighting back with full power, but shooting in the wrong direction.

There is no war and there's nothing to fight back. RoR hype is over and all that's left is noise. ZF tries to bring some concepts from Rails to PHP to improve PHP development, not to win their users. You got it all wrong.

What war? RoR was never, I repeat never a threat to PHP. If you think it was a threat you were seriously wrong. The premise that there was some kind of war is ludicrous.

Yeah beyond the first CRUD app that you can scaffold in a minute RoR is just like any other framework only with way more hype and people with attitude problems.

I recently left PHP/Fusebox for Ruby on Rails, and I doubt that I'll go back. Why? Because Ruby is simply a better-designed language than PHP (the fact that Rails is a great framework helped to). The question of language design isn't what got me to RoR, but it is what ensures that I will stay there until a better solution yet comes along.

(And by the way, I don't generally use RoR's scaffolding features, although I tried at one point. That's not where RoR really shines -- it's just an overhyped newbie hook. Rails' greater strengths are in more advanced areas.)

The fact is that, compared to Ruby, PHP feels like an ugly kludge. Until the PHP core team face up to that, they will lose developers to better-designed languages. There may not be a war, but there's certainly a force at work.
