Spaced repetition is a simple idea: you memorize something and get reminders about that at different intervals depending on how well you remember it. So if I know the Japanese word for "cat" very well, I don't need a reminder until perhaps 20 days from now. But if I am struggling with recalling the word for "Paris syndrome", getting a reminder every few hours would probably do me good. As I remember it better and better, the reminder frequency drops off.
