I work on interfaces used by college students to search for academic articles. Librarians buy these databases. Librarians happen to be wonderful clients to build products for because they always let you know what they don’t like.

Interface icons should be introduced very carefully, even tried and tested with an audience of naive users (like me). For instance the 'Home' icon (meaning go back to square one, reset) is an American thing, it's meaningless outside that culture. Showing a telephone set like a ATT500, you know, those with 2 wires, is becoming meaningless because young users have never seen such an object. Even Apple is introducing symbols and icons that I have to google to find their usage.
