It's good to experiment and learn new things, but only experimenting to pad their resume? It just seems distracting at best. I always try to come up with a useful business reason for any technology I decide to study and learn. Future employers might not be too happy if you spent alot of time studying tools to further only your own career prospects and not the overall business that employs you.
