There are several ways of installing Java on the Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex). One of the easiest ways is to make use of apt-get command in Ubuntu. Before the command can be executed, a few steps needs to be followed.

Better show the way to do it using the gui tools. The only step you need a console window for is the alternatives setup

Although, this does mean that you can use these directions using the server version.
