Instant HTML5 Fonts and Typography provides a basic overview of how custom fonts can be used on a webpage. It covers Google Fonts, CSS3 font properties, the Cufón font library and how to include locally stored fonts with @font-face. The book is short, fast and focused. In 62 pages it shows how to use a variety of techniques to customize font on your webpages. Besides providing various ways to modify the appearance of your website, it also demonstrates a practical example of how fonts can be used to display math equations. The source code of all examples can be downloaded for easy reference. I enjoyed the last two `recipes'. I found Cufón to be extremely easy and fast to implement. The final recipe describes how to add font to an images, so that it looks like it was done in an image editor. It also reveals how to use third party libraries to create interesting animation effects. While I am familiar with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, I am definitely a beginner with custom fonts. I found the book an interesting summary of the modern ways to use font on webpages. I rated the book two out of five at Amazon because it is badly edited and lacks refinement. Although the intention of the Instant series is too be brief, I found the lack of detail made the content difficult to follow.
