A year and a half after the last major release of NetBeans, a glow on the horizon signals the dawning of a brave new day in the world of open-source IDEs.
While the arm wrestling match for market share between open-source IDEs was won some time ago by Eclipse, the soon-to-be released version of NetBeans may re-ignite a longstanding competition.
NetBeans 6.0 is scheduled to be released in November, and reviewers already are giving it high marks based on the beta release now available for download. A lean, mean integrated machine, NetBeans 6.0 has acquired hundreds of the add-on modules written for it over the past year and a half. Those modules have been polished and woven into the IDE as a whole making for a lightweight, responsive, and easily configurable IDE.
