The article “We Don’t Use Software That Costs Money Here” on dzone.com has caused me to want to write an article that I have wanted to write for some time now. I am an open-source developer involved in 5 open-source projects. These projects range from a few months old to many years old and all are very popular. We have had tens of thousands of downloads, and software developers talk of our software regularly and positively.

Man you *really* need a reality check... ;)
Google for Quid Pro Quo and I bet even you would be able to earn money on FOSS SW development...!

Oh Please. Give me a break! Does any one actually believe there's an equal give and take in OSS. Mostly I see the OSS community taking and not contributing. We constantly get people demanding support and other things for free.

But hey, lets all get communal and socialist. Why is it that most communal communities are also inbred communities?

Just wondering...

In my opinion very few categories of software can be successful as OSS. These are some of the intrinsic properties it should have (IMHO):
- relatively complex and sophisticated to use
- have a clear strategy of having commercial value add-ons without downgrading OSS core product value
- being in a popular software segment translating into large potential user group
- being business friendly by having a solid commercial entity behind it
- being strong OSS proponent to cultivate community around it

Best,
Nikita Ivanov.
