The Java guys spend three days a week debugging stuff that's gone wrong with Tomcat on one server or another. It's always some incompatibility here, surprise-bite-you-in-the-ass-there. Two applications on the same server use the same JAR file, so the containers refuse to load.

I tend to agree with sdnakhla... We need a "more rant than opinion" option on the complaints form ;-)

I guess that absence sense of humor might be really dangerous :-)

Very emotional, but not quite clear what is the exact software/hardware
environment causing so many problems for JVM to run smoothly.

If you hate Java J2EE then you'll love Ruby. Especially if you are a heavy C langauge slinger.

i think the title is crude, taken literally ;)
cossins replied ago:
Very emotional, but that doesn't mean he's wrong. I've never worked with Java on that scale, but the problems he mentions are causes of a design philosophy that manifests itself right down to the most basic JDK APIs, and is the main reason why Java is such a huge pain to work with for most people.

I'm no prude, but come on, can't we at least post articles to the web without using crude language?

It is definitely your java guys design, no questions full stop. I see a couple of problems right away...multiple versions of jdk? For a server side app? Who the hell allowed that to happen? Talk about bad IT governance.
As for the difficulties in adding a new table; I can't believe it takes that much effort to add a new table...and if anything at all, it's your mgmt's fault for allowing that kind of architecture into a live environment...as surely anyone w/ even a little IT should know that new tables will always come. I'm even more astounded it takes that long w/ Hibernate(if you get MyEclipse, it will generate most of your hibernate persistence layer classes straight from the SQL Browser)...it's so much simpler in Hibernate as opposed to straight JDBC, or some EJB2(haven't played w/ 3).
Actually, come to think of it...seems like it's your mgmt's philosophy. 256 in RAM is not enough for Java IDE's...but if your company isn't willing to pay for more than that in RAM, then they definitely won't pay for good developers. You get what you pay for

So as we all know that that guy is ~90% wrong (and ~10% right), let's just laugh for a minute and pass on. There's no need to complain any more.

Actually, J2EE *does* suck huge donkey balls. I know J2EE personally, and, as disgusting as it is, I can vouch for it.
I also know C personally, and I can safely say that C does *not* suck donkey balls at all, although it leaves its shit all over the living room and tries to hog the couch when I want to watch Battlestar Galactica.

Could be funny if it wasn't seriously incompetent as well. Whether you put SQL directly into a page template is not a question of using PHP or JSP, it's a design question.

What do you expect from /.? The only surprise I'd get there is if they were positive about anything at all to do with Java or Microsoft...

The link is a rant that the Java developers he knows are incompetent, which has nothing to do with J2EE.
