Java 6: compile once, run nowhere?
Java's strength is supposed to be "compile once, run everywhere". This claim is true in most of Java 1.4 and 5.0 applications. But what about Java 6? Is Java loosing it's most important property?

"Write once, run anywhere" (WORA) was the slogan. Used by Sun the last time approx. 10 years ago.

Using the latest version means lower compatibility. That isn't much of a surprise though. It's the same with any language/API/whatever, which require the user to update their system. E.g. CSS, OpenGL, DirectX, .net, Flash, etc.

I could have written this a year ago whining about the distribution of Java 5 and a year before that about Java 4 etc....
