This java tutorial talks about Java Preferences API with the help of sample examples programs. Java Preferences API are light weight, cross platform persistence layer. Preferences API stores the System and User Preferences to the OS level storages.

Use Properties. There are reasons why Preferences are hardly ever used.

Actually its not correct to compare preferences APIs directly with properties file. Preferences APIs stores the preferences, which may change any time. As a user I may wish to save my preferences of look and feel and the application wants to persist it somewhere. Preferences API is a nice way to do that.
