In response to this article at ajaxian.com, and just for the sheer fun of it, here's a small-footprint object-encapsulated unobtrusive javascript crossfader. At 1.7Kb it's one hundredth of the size of the scriptaculous library used in the other example. (Woohoo.) The constructor takes three variables: an array containing the ids of the divs to be faded, the fade time, and the delay between fades.
