I've been developing with JSF for the last 8 weeks, and while (some of the) ideas behind it are good, its main problem is that there aren't a lot of components. There are a lot of component libraries, but many of them can't just be mixed and matched together. Also the documentation of those component libraries is often awful. IMHO a good article which sums up the problems of JSF is http://www.theserverside.com/tt/articles/article.tss?l=RethinkingJSF

Hopefully JSF 2 (to be released at the end of this year, together with Java EE 6) will fix JSF a bit. It looks pretty good, but it'll take a while for tools & documentation to appear. Till then, I'm not sure what should be used instead. Maybe Tapestry or Wicket, but I haven't looked into them a lot yet.
