I don't know squat about building widgets with jQuery, so I thought I would fix this by rearranging my trusty progress bar code once more and see how it would look as a jQuery.ui widget. The jQuery.ui documentation is still a work in progress so it was a bit of an adventure, but once again the elegance of jQuery kept my frustrations to a minimum and I think I ended up with something pretty useful.
