ok, not to nitpick, but when did regular expressions become a "new technology"?
if this is "new" compared to your current experience, and you actually count regex as that, I'd call you poorly experienced
don't colleges teach regular expressions anymore? I mean wasn't that like right after C string management?
that being said, its YOU who should pay the price, being in a CS job *is* learning, if your lucky your employer pays you back for it, but really its like why Boxers train, Football players practice, and Doctors play golf.... ok maybe not Doctors, but really you need to train yourself to constantly improve, goes with the territory.

You are right, RegEx is nothing new. This was actually the easy part of that job. Not that long ago, I wrote a Clipper 5.01 to Dbase 4 converter using RegEx and Perl. So I think I know it well enough. I mentioned it just because it is part of the project.
I also agree with you that I should pay most of the price (unlike my wife) to learn new things, that comes with the job. My point is, it would be great to reuse all this knowledge in more that two project. Technology changes so quickly we hardly have time to master the subject before something new comes out.
Working for a consulting company, clients hire me to do what I know. On the other hand we have to offer the best technological solution available at the moment. It's a never ending race.
