The major press outlets are abuzz this morning with news of a major new security flaw that affects all versions of Internet Explorer from IE5 to the latest beta of IE8. The attack has serious and far-reaching ramifications -- and they're not just theoretical attacks. In fact, the flaw is already in wide use as a tool to steal online game passwords, with some 10,000 websites infected with the code needed to take advantage of the hole in IE.

I only use IE for debugging purposes under Visual Studio. For all forms of browsing, IE has been fired ever since 2003. The Great Spyware Pestilence of 2003 was brought to you almost entirely by IE's marvelous ActiveX hosting features. A combination of SP2, a hardware firewall, and FireFox have kept me safe ever since.

I'm not gonna lie. I've had 3 different virus outbreaks on PC's that I own. In all 3 cases the viruses got on my system through IE by various buffer overflows and other vulnerabilities. Had to make the switch to Firefox. Also, from a development perspective plug-ins like Firebug are simply incredible.
MS' dev tools are excellent and their OS is decent and easy to use. The big problem is that MS just can't seem to SECURE IE. Most of the attack vectors nowadays are thru the browser They've made some great strides locking down Vista security wise but IE still lags behind in their security focus. Unfortunately because of this I had to start using Firefox or else I would become the proud owner of a zombie PC.

Have to enjoy formatting and re-installing Win XP and Vista to fully appreciate just how fun Windows is.
