What's wrong with preachy? He makes some good points and it's well-written. On a topic like this, one should be a bit preachy, because one is, essentially, trying to change the behavior of others -- the essence of preaching.
I'm sorry you felt that way; please believe me when I say that I did not intend to come across as holier-than-thou. I am as guilty as anyone when it comes to slacking off on my appearance during the work week.

I thought it was a good article. You will bring more value as a presentable developer with decent social skills over the stereotypical developer.
The people voting against the article are probably the ones who don't care about what they look like all that much :)
