No freakin' kidding. This is a total joke! I was honestly excited about JavaFX, but without Linux support, I won't waste my time. If I wanted to ignore the Linux platform, I would have considered Silverlight. Flex seems to be the only platform that supports Linux, Mac, and Windows. Way to totally screw this launch up Sun!! Linux support will be "coming soon" no doubt, but the message is clear. Linux is a second-class citizen in the JavaFX world.
Adobe say they support linux, but we are still 2. rank citizens there. When reporting crashing problems with the player, it is ignored. And the FlexBuilder IDE is not finally released for linux yet. They suck too.
As a Java dev, I am not too happy with this situation. And this is just part of a trend that keeps growing. I was actually looking forward to JavaFX as my first Java GUI platform. I think the delay on Linux could be due to media libraries, but I might be wrong.
Google does the same thing with its products. No native Chrome, Google Earth etc.
The article is fine, so don't consider my down vote against the article itself. My problem is with Simon in a comment defending JavaFX initially not being released on Linux. We are developers so we should understand Sun? Ok, how long has Sun been working on JavaFX? How many resources do they have? A whole lot more than any dev team I've ever worked on. Sun is so totally out of touch with the community. They have no clue what we really want. As Kirill said in his last blog entry, Sun has completely closed out the community with regards to JavaFX's direction. This is just the wrong approach.
JavaFX will fail. Say what you will. Flex has too firm a grip and JavaFX is just too crappy too late. I'm not saying this because I am a fan of Flex. I am just stating fact. Ok, somewhat opinionated fact. But I honestly believe JavaFX will fail.
No Linux? so this is not Java, Java means multiplatform so JavaFX should be also. Maybe better I use Mono/silverlight or Python or Flex it run on Mac, Windows and Linux.
People forget JavaFX is a dead project, Use Java/Swing is the best bet or go with alternatives, Flex, Silverlight, Ajax, Python/QT etc.
Also why need the mobile part? that one is getting really difficult with IPhone and Andriod and another proprietary platforms, Sun should put 100% focus on RIA on the Web and Desktop with JavaFX for Windows, Mac and Linux but they dont do it, they dont listen to users, that is why they are in this economy in very bad situation they could be done tomorrow or by the end of the year. Always Sun mistake in everything, They still suck in the desktop, JavaFX does not bring nothing new, you can get the same effect with Java2D. It is useless and a waste for time for all of us.
