How Do Locks Lock?

When I was 9 or so, I was convinced I could write my own operating system in GW-BASIC. After all, I had written programs that played Mary Had a Little Lamb on the PC speaker while displaying CGA graphics. How much harder could an operating system be? One thing had me stumped. How would I get my OS to multitask?
