Mozilla's Prism add-on for Firefox has been released in beta this week. The add-on lets users pull a favorite website — like Gmail or YouTube — out of the web browser and run it as a stand-alone application on the desktop. This article discusses Prism and the emergence of HTML/JavaScript powered desktop apps as a challenge to proprietary efforts such as AIR and Silverlight.

The Gmail icon was not sharp as the Google Gears Gmail desktop icon, other than that it worked great.
