In response to a Groovy-bashing post by a Scala advocate, I decided to blog a rebuttal of sorts. It aims to be thorough, sober and fair, as you can tell from the title.

Thank you Chris for your "beat-back" :-)

Ok so there's another round of language wars.

To be frank - I do not even bother to find out, which is "best". Why?

A programming language will no longer gain an impact on its own - current abstraction requirements mandate an infrastructure to be available in order to put the programming language to productive use. I'm working with a Java development team and trying to persuade both stake holders and colleagues to switch to Grails. Although it might send waves of pain down the spines of Groovy lovers - the initial Groovy code was just plain Java with Groovyisms slowly leaking into .groovy files.

So for me, Groovy (and Groovy++) is not a new language at all, but an evolutionary step applied to Java in order to both augment its abstraction and its versatility to a level beyond java.lang.reflect and annotations.

Maybe not cool at all, but surely very productive. Right here and now.

I would have preferred a less aggressive title. The content is ok.
