I’ve spent almost all of my career with something along the lines of “freelancer”, “consultant”, or “contractor” on my business cards and the forms HR departments make me sign. On the two occasions that hasn’t been the case I’ve been working for as part of a development team that was primarily developing solutions for external customers, or managing a team of contractors working on launching a start-up.

As a craftsman I know tools matter - if you are a dev and you can't use "vi", never touched emacs and think Notepad is cool I don't want to know you. The best devs I know have a slew of great tools and those tools help make them great devs. All the best devs introduce me to great new tools e.g. Notepad++, FindBugs, YourKit etc.
That's not to say that business folks should care - they shouldn't have to - I agree with that - but between us tech folks, tools matter.
