Maths isn't about doing arithmetic - it is so much more. It is time that computers and programming made it possible to get away from the rote learning of number skils and made math different from the arithmetic that any 50 cent calcuator can do. Watch Conrad Wolfram's video and join the movement.

A truly fascinating talk. I don't know if it's a silver bullet like he states but my gut reaction to using a computer for mundane and error prone calculations and writing a program to prove you understand the steps of the calculation really sounds like a fascinating approach that will not only advance math education but our understanding and application of it. I fear that this potentially groundbreaking approach may never take hold though due to old outdated stereotypes and thinking.

Yes I'd agree. There are a range of people who would oppose such changes - including many mathematicans who belive that rote numeracy is the basis for advance mathematics (wrongly).
So what do we do to make it happen?
