In my development career thus far, Java (and more recently Grails) is what pays my bills. Thats the work I do from 8 to 5. Within those the circles, (not just the people I work with, but conferences, meeting groups, etc) there seems to be a very real, very biased lack of respect for PHP developers and PHP as whole.

Well put. I think it might have something to do with the fact that most universities don't teach PHP, or at least not to the extent as some of the other languages, and therefore its never taken seriously from the onset. And then, down the road, those grads feel as a self-defense mechanism defend their taught language to the death, instead of giving PHP its due recognition.

It's sad, it really is, because even the most die-hard PHP developer would most likely surrender that PHP is *not* a perfect language, and is *not* the best language for every scenario, yet others see it as "my language or the highway".

Outstanding point...wish I'd have thought of it myself ;) And certainly I think many PHP guys would agree with you, it isn't perfect, but its a balance of learning curve and productivity etc.

For PHP is always gonna be a tool in my belt, especially for moonlighting-type work. But it is "just another tool" in my belt. I'm actually getting to some grails in my 8 to 5 job which is a wonderful break from "traditional" Java work, though I think I may be annoying my cubemates a bit with my little giggles of coding pleasure while their knee deep in config files :)

*cough* yahoo.com *cough*
*coughcough* digg.com *coughcough*

not to mention umpteen *successful* CMS's. (just to skim a few examples)

That being said, its not perfect for every situation, but it is highly adaptable to many situations, its quick, it does't involve a shit-ton of configuration. What is your language of choice and why? Your argument, from where I stand right now reeks of troll, and thats fine with me. It sounds as if you have read some articles and felt qualified to comment. Point out the examples and preferably PERSONAL experience and then come talk to me.

"It is a decent web templating language if you don't ask it to do too much, and if you look at its success stories, it's usually a thin presentation layer on top of a massive infrastructure, none of which is in PHP. "

I'd love for you to back this statement up with some, you know, facts and examples.

i've buzzed around the site a bit and just about anywhere I've seen him comment, its more of the same thing...vague arguments (probably not even original thought) with no facts/personal experiences to back it up.
