As Walter Bright points out here, redundancy is often thought to be a bad thing when it comes to programming languages. But in fact, well-designed redundancy can dramatically improve productivity by uncovering errors early in the development process. Redundancy not only helps find errors, it helps produce better error messages, and helps the maintenance programmer in understanding the intent of the code.
