Applets were the original "rich client"-enabling technology. However, due to some early performance and compatibility issues, as well as the "lowest common denominator" approach taken by the AWT, they never really took off. Now, after over a decade of increasingly complex server-generated UI, new applet-like technologies are beginning to emerge

I think we really can't go around ranting about how AJAX is just a redone version of technology that came before (which it is). I mean, first Microsoft, and now Java fan-boys (and I actually *like* Java) are going on about how AJAX is just reinventing the wheel. Well, you know what? The wheel went through quite a few development iterations before our ancestors got it right. AJAX is just another step in web evolution; I'm sure there'll be something beyond it.

As for applets in particular... Applets are dead, we have killed them.

I agree ... and AJAX isn't even anything new; it's concepts that have been around for a while.

@Daniel - it's funny how you bring up the wheel metaphor and apply it for AJAX, and not for Applets. I agree w/ you on the wheel metaphor, but only that If it can happen for 1 technology, then it can happen to another.

The way I see it...Applets could come back if Java Browser Edition does what it is supposed to...or Sun or someone else builds a high quality browser built in Java Swing....that'll take care of much of the slow Applet startup time.

Big ifs definitely...but you're wheel reference is applicable everywhere.
