It is a pure Java database which requires Java 1.4. As long as you can run Java 1.4 Derby should also work.

Actually, Derby supports Java 1.4 up to 1.6.

If you download Java DB (http://developers.sun.com/javadb/) you also get installers
for Solaris, Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.
