If you haven't yet read this thread on Joel's Software Discussion Group and Jeff Atwood's response to it, then please go do so. I'll wait... You done? Okay, well for those who didn't read them (and that is probably most of you), I'll quickly summarize... a guy posted Joel's board asking about what career he could switch to from being a developer. He is clearly dismayed by the current state of affairs in the development industry and is looking for an out. While I agree with Joel that now is not the time to go switching jobs (never a good idea during a recession), I don't agree with a lot of what Joel says. Every time I read something Joel writes I have to remind myself that he lives in the land of milk and honey. Joel is obviously a talented guy, so why does he think that programmers are spoiled?

only programmers would come up with the thought that they could possibly be spoiled.
which could be good or bad...

joel's comment about ppl getting $75k straight out of uni is absolute crap, especially in australia where we'd be lucky to get that with 10 years exp
everyone's responses to joels post is almost completely correct and agreeable. joel is a fool to have written that

Why so many listens to Joel like he's a messiah is a mystery to me, in fact, its starting to scare me a little.

I wrote this in the blog, but we honestly are. I make way too much money at 23 yrs old, with way too many perks. I mean surgeons make as much as mid-level programmers from the top companies, but without the liabilities. We are truly lucky to be in the position we are in.

american devs are, you guys make far more than us aussies
gareth_western replied ago:
agreed. UK developers (outside London) don't make anywhere near that much either. It's quite depressing. But at least I don't have to live in the US or London ;) (joke!)

the only excuse i see for US capital city devs and london devs for high pay is the high cost of living... however, here in aus capitals the cost of living is also huge (sometimes more [see sydney and brisbane!]) yet the still comes no where near as close
