Longhorn, Leopard, Indigo, Poseidon, Gran Paradiso, Yukon, SharpFreedom, Supertanga, Revolution, Lightning, Lambrate, Orcas, Q98, Fiji, Pendolino, McKinley. What does all these names have in common? Apparently nothing... but they are all codenames for various kind of software.

I'm completely for project and/or release names. Without them, technology developed internally seems to gain no traction; it doesn't feel "business tangible". You only have to look at examples like AJAX to see how powerful naming technology can be.

place I used to work at, the initials were xs, so every project started with xs

took em years to realize I had slipped a pun into every project name since they looked at the spelling, but never pronounced excess

xsTime, xsWork, xsDocuments, xsIssues, xsBugs, and the list goes on
