If the question is "Is programming an art or science?", then the follow up question is "Are programmers artists or scientists?"
Off the top of my head, I can think of lots of people who fit both bills--musicians like Al Stevens, Herb Schildt, and Charlie Cocchiaro, and artists like Erik Demaine all come to mind.

This is a complete misunderstanding of the entire "programming is an art" debate. They try to link programming to art by including subjects like "design", "graphics", "game design" and so on. The whole idea is that the actual task of PROGRAMMING is an art form in itself. Meaning when I implement Dijkstras Extra or Quick Sort in JavaScript with a beautiful closure hack (e.g.) that's an *ACTUAL PIECE OF ART*. I don't have to fire up "Photo Shop" or something to be defined as an artist. I am an artist merely by doing something brilliant even in Notepad for Ruby, JavaScript or something similar...
