It's an inside joke, of sorts: James Strachan recently posted a piece stating if he had read about Scala circa 2003, he wouldn't have worked on Groovy.
I should have mentioned that I got the joke too - I just read the blog post yesterday where JS mentioned that. Maybe it was just the 'death to groovy' title. I just don't get why people hate on it so much :)

Strachan said that if he'd known more about scala in 2003 he wouldn't have started groovy (somethingl like that).
