Wow, way for The Register to be on top of stories. Not only is this old news (about two months old), but it's also a non-story. For years, people bitched that they couldn't install Click Once applications in Firefox. So, to address this concern, Microsoft came out with an add on that made it possible. That's it. End of story. It's not a security hole, it's not a violation of privacy, it's a feature that allows click once deployment to occur within Firefox.. As an end user, you still have to specifically choose to install a Click Once application.
I think it's a bigger non-issue than that. The article tries to intentionally paint this as "evil Microsoft doing what only Microsoft can do". The reality, though, is that ANYONE could have done this. Any installation package could have installed any kind of Firefox extension in exactly the same way. "Unknown" to the user. "Difficult" to remove, and I might add, due to the bad design of Firefox here, not because of any nefarious doing by the installer. There's NO reason to be up in arms over this "issue", other than if you're a MS basher looking for something to do some spin doctoring on.

People will bitch at anything Microsoft does.
