In the aftermath of my post on JRuby's performance, I exchanged some info with Mr. JRuby himself, Charles Nutter. Per his request, I opened a bug on the matter. It looks like it is a JVM issue, i.e. JRuby ran slowly on IBM's J9 JVM. I did some micro-benching on Ruby vs. JRuby on a variety of platforms and JVMs.
