A professional five years in gives some career advice to those who are just getting started. "The last thing you want to say is 'It worked on my machine.' That's a classic that never flies with anyone. Would you believe it?"

"Love it or leave it" is a half-truth. The software profession needs to find a way to get unlovable tasks done. That's part of being professional.
The idea that software developers are supposed to be in love with our work leads to the idea that we should be paid peanuts. You know, we like what we do so much that we'll work nights and weekends for free. Accountants, Doctors, Lawyers and Executives get paid to deal with BS. So should we.

Paul,
I think the majority of developers here with more than a few years experience and some talent work regular hours and get paid well for it (probably as much as an accountant or more).
Please stop with the doctor/lawyer comparisons.
