the problem with OpenSolaris is that really it has none of the really useful software: DeCSS, k9copy, Ardour, etc, etc. The list of packages is miniscule compared to Ubuntu's.
Unfortunately, Sun has 0 idea on how to build a community around its open source offerings. And they don't really have a track record of keeping their committments (remember their short lived Java Desktop System Linux distro?)

Thanks Jacek for your comment . you are referring to desktop-experience packages ,of course OpenSolaris can't compete at the moment with Linux as a desktop OS though these package can be easily ported to OpenSolaris.
again , I do encourage OpenSolaris as server alternative not a desktop !
