In France 2 weeks ago, I realized why software engineers make bad businessmen and why open source is taking off. Its because most software engineers, while they like the money associated with developing software, really are technologists.

I have known for years that I have to work for a living because I don't care if my sites make money. My current site is free to join and use; no ads; no nags for donations; and no merchandise for sale. So how does it make money? It doesn't!. That is not what it is for. It is a testing ground for new ideas; a nursery for internet authors; and an education center for any who want to learn. The pay off comes when one of the pieces from the site hits page one on democratic sites like this or gets bookmarked a thousand time on sites like del.icio.us. Yesterday one of our guys got to front page on digg and buried the server. It will cost a few bucks for bandwidth, but so what thousands were exposed to an author they never heard of and got a great piece of information that gets spread across blogs and bookmarks for even more to see.

I used to sit on forums and help sites helping one person at a time, maybe getting an idea exposed to 10. Now there is no limit to how many I can reach. This kind of site is the future of information sharing, and what we are building in the backromm at my site is part of the new method of information creation. The two go hand in hand.

Maybe at some point the site will cost enough to operate that I have to put a small ad or two on it, but not as long as the monthly cost of hosting is less than my bar tab.

I cannot vote for this article. I have worked with web based technologies for the past 10 years. It became obvious to me that my paycheck was attached to sales, sales was attached to the acceptence of our product etc....

So from day one, I am always interested in what is happening in the business and how I can help (as a developer, developer manager etc) to better the sales of our XZY software system.

Granted there are a lot of heads down coders that have no clue what happens outside of their Dilbert cube....and these same folks are SHOCKED when the company tanks and everyone is canned.

So if you have the luxury to work for a company where you get to just worry about technology and not company performance and downsizing, then you are truly blessed. I watch everything happening in the company I work for.....I don't want some company driving my family's budget.

Regards,
Tom
