Over the weekend, one of the developers of JXTA dropped me a line telling me that a contributor had sent him a cool new plugin to MyJXTA2 - VOIP. After receiving the link to the webstartable verison of MyJXTA with VOIP (no link yet, they're still working out the bugs), we proceeded to have a quick chat with surprisingly good audio quality. Apparently, it turned out to not be that hard to accomplish and JXTA lends itself sending arbitrary data to peers (think video).
