David Van Couvering recently blogged that a good way to learn programming and break into the profession is to join an open source project and submit bug fixes. I replied in comments that his friend would be better off starting his own project from scratch. The above-linked article has nothing to do with programming, but it brilliantly illustrates why I feel this way.
