Is shorter code always better? This post provides a concrete example showing that compaction may eventually degrade readability. The subsequent discussion also raises a few interesting points.

i think the concensus is do whatever is best for understandability

Perhaps there is consensus on that "more understandable = good". However, it is difficult to define what that means from person-to-person.

Still, it would mean that shorter is not always gospel. There are places you can apply your judgment (and better be prepared to defend it. ;-))
