Enterprises have just begun to dip their toes into the OSGi pool. Modularity is not easy to implement, but IBM is trying to make it easier for enterprise Java developers. The company recently unveiled its Open Alpha for OSGi applications on the WebSphere Application Server (WAS) v7. DZone spoke with IBM Distinguished WebSphere Engineer, Ian Robinson, in an exclusive interview to gain some perspective on the new alpha. Robinson says WebSphere used OSGi internally since version 6.1, however, there was no exposure of OSGi to the applications that were deployed in WAS. "The applications that you deploy through it [WAS 6.1] are essentially Java EE applications deployed as enterprise archives," he said. The new OSGi alpha in WAS 7 pushes OSGi capabilities to the next level by allowing enterprise applications to be deployed as OSGi bundles.
