Is bundling a database with the JDK a nice feature? Or is it just bloat that most people will not use?

Not horrible. I think this could be really useful. It's not a massive addition to the footprint...

I think it is horrible too. For one, most people won't use it. For another, it will almost certainly end up lagging behind the official Derby version from Apache, so people will want to download that one anyway. And for another, as others have pointed out in the JL thread on this topic, it alienates third parry vendors of Java database products. Like hsqldb for example.
